Napoleon Bonaparte, born in 1769 on the island of Corsica, is one of the most distinguished military and political leaders in French history. He seized power through a coup in 1799 and subsequently established the First French Empire. His military prowess was fully displayed during the Napoleonic Wars, and although he ultimately faced defeat, his reforms and legal codes have had a lasting impact on modern state systems.
